The Perfect 7-Day Himachal Road Trip Route

HIMACHAL PRADESH · MOUNTAIN LOOP

The most common Himachal mistake is a route that zigzags — Shimla, back to Chandigarh, up to Manali, back down for Dharamshala. A one-directional loop saves an entire day of driving you'll never get back. Here's a 7-day route that flows in one line.

The route at a glance

Chandigarh (arrival) → Shimla (2 nights) → Manali (2 nights) → Kasol (2 nights) → Delhi or Chandigarh (departure). Total driving across the week is roughly 10–11 hours, spread across three transfer days rather than crammed into one.

Day-by-day breakdown

  • Day 1: Arrive Chandigarh, drive to Shimla (roughly 3.5 hrs). Evening on Mall Road.
  • Day 2: Full day in Shimla — Christ Church, Jakhoo Temple, and a short trip to Kufri if you want snow-season activities.
  • Day 3: Drive Shimla to Manali (about 8 hrs via Kullu — this is the longest single drive, so start early). Stop at Kullu for a short break.
  • Day 4: Manali sightseeing — Old Manali cafes, Hadimba Temple, and Solang Valley for adventure activities.
  • Day 5: Optional Rohtang Pass excursion (permit + seasonal closure dependent) or a relaxed day trip to Naggar Castle.
  • Day 6: Drive Manali to Kasol (about 3.5 hrs). Evening riverside in the Parvati Valley.
  • Day 7: Morning in Kasol or a short trek to Chalal village, then drive to Bhuntar (Kullu) airport or begin the return journey.

Best time to drive this route

March to June and September to November are the most reliable windows — roads are clear and weather is predictable. If you specifically want snow, December through February works for Shimla and Manali, but Rohtang Pass and higher-altitude stops will likely be closed, and winter driving on hill roads requires caution and, ideally, local experience or a hired driver.

Self-drive vs. hired car

Hill driving in Himachal — sharp switchbacks, narrow shoulders, occasional landslide-affected stretches — is genuinely different from highway driving. Unless you have specific mountain-driving experience, hiring a car with a local driver for the full loop is usually the better call, and it isn't dramatically more expensive once you factor in fuel, tolls and the mental bandwidth saved.

Where this route can flex

Short on time? Drop Kasol and extend Manali by two days — you'll still get the Parvati Valley vibe from Old Manali's cafe culture. Have extra days? Add Dharamshala/McLeodganj after Kasol via a detour through Bhuntar, though this adds roughly a full day of driving each way.
